Parents,
I was very happy to get to meet with most of you last week! It is always a joy to talk individually about each of the scholar's in my class with parents who care so deeply for them and their education. Your support is so important, and your hard work at home with each scholar truly does not go unnoticed. As second quarter advances, our schoolwork will advance even further as well. I believe you will be excited to see much more challenging work and assignments this quarter, and our scholars are diving right in! I am incredibly proud of the work they have already exhibited this quarter; I cannot wait to see their progress in another nine weeks. Some new things to watch out for: - Students will now have a summary they need to complete in their history journal that coincides with the notes and discussion from that day in class. The scholar's job is to summarize in 2-3 complete sentences (with capitalization and punctuation) that day's notes and discussion in History. This will be used as a study tool, as they learn to utilize their notes and review the information each day we learn something new. When you see "study" on their agenda, please be sure to review the notes with them and their summary after they have written it. If they are able to teach it to you, they will be able to better retain it themselves later on. - Students also began a Rocket Math program today in class. It's job is to simply help scholars practice their math facts. A parent letter will be going home about this tomorrow as well. - Our phonograms are not going away! Please continue to study them every night. Just pick ten cards and work to get them mastered. If you did just ten cards each night, by the end of the week you'd have 50 of the 70 mastered. Don't stop now! - I know that some of the homework can be a challenge, particularly in math. Please do not get discouraged if your scholar is not mastering the subtraction just yet. We have only spent two days on the material (however, after today I bet, for many of you, the homework was much easier tonight!). We have this entire week to continue practicing, so be an encouragement to your scholar during homework time and know that things will get easier each day. - Please remember that it is important to read with your scholar or have them read independently each night as well. Let this be a fun time to read a book for enjoyment or a book that interests them. We want to develop a love of reading, not force it. -This Thursday, October 29th, is picture retake day. If you are interested in retakes or if your scholar missed picture day, this is for you! Picture order forms will be going home tomorrow if you wish to order these. It is a privilege to come to school each day and get to teach your children. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected].

I hope you're all having a safe and fun fall break! I look forward to seeing you all next week for conferences. Remember each day is a half day. School is out at 12:00!
Please don't forget to attend our Singapore Math night tomorrow night at 6:30. This will answer so many questions I know a lot of you are having! I hope to see you there.
- Miss Gaab Dear Parents,
The last week of our first quarter has arrived. We have accomplished so much, and I look forward to everything they will accomplish in the coming months as well. We have discussed perseverance frequently this quarter. Our scholars have persevered every day during the things that may seem hard in school, and I am so proud of them. Next week, we will move from double and triple digit addition and subtraction without renaming to beginning to break apart tens and hundreds to regroup numbers. It is important to remember we will not be using the words “borrow” or “carry.” I will send home another cheat sheet to display how we will be teaching the students to regroup, so you can be using the same vocabulary and strategies at home. After finishing Charlotte’s Web, we will now begin to read Boxcar Children. I will be returning the students’ Charlotte’s Web books in the coming week. If you have not purchased and sent in a copy of Boxcar Children with your scholar yet, please be sure to do so. If you have already done so, I will be passing those out to your scholar this week. Our water cycle and cloud unit will be coming to a close this week. There will be a final test on Thursday and a review on Wednesday. As we look closer at the types of clouds, it would be fun for you and your scholar to go outside and try to identify some of the different types of clouds you both see (especially if a storm is coming). Please attend our upcoming Singapore Math informational night on October 7th at 6:30. If you have had any questions with the way math has been taught or where we are headed, this is a night for you! Please continue to study your phonograms every night. I have seen improvement, and it is greatly helping our readers. Also, please remember that Friday, October 9th, we do not have school. I hope you all have a wonderful last week and safe fall break. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected]. I am looking forward to a fantastic last week of our first quarter! |
