Parents, It has been a wonderful three weeks. The first month of school is full of so many new beginnings. I love getting to see each scholar become a special part of our community. Check the homework tab of our blog if you need another copy of the poem. Please email me if you have any questions or concerns. Mrs. Bennett Parents,
In addition to the Meet the Teacher flipbook information about history summaries, I wanted to clarify what I am looking for in students' history summaries. Each night, students are to complete a history summary each night unless we have a quiz without any new content that day. Summaries must be in his or her own words, not copying the notes. Summaries are to be written on the same page as the notes or on the page to the left of the notes (essentially wherever there is space on that page). Each summary graded for the week is worth 5 points. - 1 point for a capital letter at the beginning - 1 point for correct punctuation at the end - 1 point for 2 - 3 complete sentences - 2 points for content (written in their own words with real detail) Examples of a quality sentence: Today I learned that the equator is an imaginary line that divides the earth in half. Today I learned that I live in North America. Examples of a sentence that would not receive full credit: Today I learned about the equator. Today I learned about the continents. I hope this clarifies our expectations for history summaries. If you have any further questions, please email me. Mrs. Bennett 15 August 2016
Parents, Each night, your scholar will bring home a Math Sprint for math homework. This year, the Second Grade Team wants to focus on Singapore methods in class and math fluency at home. Math facts are incredibly important. If too much mental energy has to be spent on recalling basic math facts, there is no mental energy left to solve the problem. Here are the step-by-step directions for how to complete a Math Sprint correctly with your scholar each night.
Sincerely, The Second Grade Team Parents,
Thank you for all of your support throughout our first week of school. I already know this year is going to be amazing. We have a wonderful group of scholars, and I am excited to continue to get to know them all and how I can best serve each one. We also truly appreciate all of the supplies you are sending in. If you are having any difficulties collecting any of these supplies, please let me know as soon as possible because we will start using almost every one starting tomorrow. Upcoming events: August 15th - Peter Piper Pizza Night (see flyer that was sent home on Thursday) August 17th - Early Dismissal August 26th - Half Day Dismissal This week in second grade: - We will begin true content in every area. - We will begin learning our first 30 spelling words in Spalding. Be on the lookout for the nightly Spalding homework that will be sent home in your scholar's red folder. It should be sent back to school each day. Please read the directions on how to complete the homework correctly with your scholar. - In Math, we will study numbers within 1,000. We will review place value, number words, and arranging numbers from smallest to largest and largest to smallest. There will be a quiz on Thursday. - In history, we will be working on students' spatial sense. Scholars will look at the different features on a map and understand how to read one. They will also learn about the major continents and oceans. Be on the lookout for the ocean and continent song in their journals! Ask your scholar to sing it for you! Each night scholar's are expected to read through the notes taken that day, and write a two-three sentence summary in their own words of what they learned that day. There will be a quiz on Friday. - We will begin reading our first literature book, Boxcar Children. If you have not brought this literature book in yet, please bring it in as soon as possible. We will read chapters one and two this week. Parents, We had a wonderful day together learning many classroom and school procedures to set us up for success this year! Even with the violent rain interrupting some recess time, our scholars did a great job today! I am excited to work with them all this year. Please keep in mind that school begins at 7:50 this year instead of 8:00. This means we actually bring students into the classrooms by 7:40. Please keep this in mind as you get into your morning routines with drop off. Thank you to those of you who are continuing to bring in all of the necessary supplies. As they arrive at your homes, please just send them with your scholar each day, and we can keep track of them here. I will send personalized emails regarding supplies your scholar still needs later this week. If you did not pick up a classroom flipbook at Meet the Teacher, please contact me, so I can send one home with your scholar inside of their red folder. The flipbook IS different than the parent packet that included a parent letter from me. The flipbook contains important information regarding parent communication, homework, birthdays etc. Also, please remember to fill out the last page of the flipbook and return it to me by the end of this week. I look forward to working with you this year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at all. Mrs. Bennett Dear parents, It is with great excitement that I welcome you and your child to 2nd grade at Archway Trivium East. I am truly passionate about my profession and thrilled for the opportunity to teach your child. I cannot wait to get this school year started. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with an Emphasis in Math from Grand Canyon University. I am a native to Arizona have always lived in the East Valley. However, I found my home within Great Hearts and excitedly took the opportunity to move to the West Valley and teach at Archway Trivium East during its founding years. Mrs. Whitwell will be the teacher assistant in our classroom. Mrs. Whitwell is an Oregon native and knows she is where her heart has always longed to be: in education. She has a five year old son who is the biggest joy in her life. We are certainly lucky to have her in our classroom and our community. What happens in our classroom will affect your child’s future. I, as well as the entire Trivium faculty, will fill their minds and souls to the brim with quality content and ignite their desire to learn. From time to time, your child may even come home exhausted from all their thinking during the day. Their time here will be well spent as I will make every minute count! This letter serves as an invitation for you to join us in the learning process. We ask that you support at home the lofty goals we have set for your child. I am looking forward to a terrific year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Mrs. Bennett |
