I hope you all had a relaxing break! We are in the final weeks of our second quarter! We have a lot of learning ahead along with our Winter Concert just around the corner! Upcoming Events: Monday, December 4 - Winter Concert Students arrive at 6:45 Concert at 7:15 December 18-20: Half Day Dismissal, NO LUNCHES December 21-January 7: Winter Break This week: Spalding- Your scholar will have 30 new words this week. Each night, your scholar will receive a piece of paper, in their red folder, with the 10 words that were studied in class that day. Please dictate the 10 words to your scholar 3 times in different orders. As your scholar writes the words, they need to also do the markings for each word. Please have your scholar write their words in their best Spalding handwriting. Markings need to be done on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday you should dictate all 30 words to your scholar. Markings are not required on Thursday. ****If your child is misspelling a word, please mark it wrong and have them correct it on their homework. Scholars need to study phonograms 1-70 every night. If your scholar can say all 70 phonogram sounds, please practice having them write their phonograms as you dictate to them. Math-We will begin dividing by 2's and 3's. Students will be able to use multiplication facts to help them solve division word problems. Please continue to practice skip counting by 2's and 3's at home each night. There will be a quiz on Friday! ***Students should have addition and subtraction math facts with sums to 20 memorized. It would be good practice to have your child practice math flashcards a couple of times a week. Addition and subtraction flashcards can be purchased at most dollar stores. Science - We will be studying the Water Cycle. Students will learn about evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. There will be a test on Thursday. On Friday we will begin learning about clouds. Literature- We will begin reading Little House in the Big Woods. We will read chapters 1-4 in class and there will be a quiz on Friday over these 4 chapters. Grammar/Writing- We will continue to study adverbs. Students will be coming up with some of their own adverbs and replacing adverbs in a sentence with some of their own. The Cow- Please continue to practice reciting The Cow at home. We will begin reciting poems this week and finish all 30 scholars early next week. Please let me know if you have any questions! If you have not brought in that literature book yet, please do so as soon as possible. Although this is a high level book, I am amazed week after week by our students' engagement in our discussions. History- In history this week we will continue learning about Ancient Greece including some of the Greek gods and goddesses and the Persian Wars. Look for a study guide to come home on Wednesday. There will be a test on Thursday. We will continue to read aloud the Iliad. The students are enjoying this story and how it connects with what we are learning in history! It is a great illustration of how the Greeks' belief in the gods and goddesses influenced their daily lives and choices, even within war.
