Parents,
I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving break! I enjoyed time with my family, did some wedding planning, and definitely ate too much (I don't have to fit into my dress yet right?!) The last three weeks of this quarter are going to fly by, so fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride! This week we have many exciting things coming! - We are continuing our exploration of multiplication through word problems. This allows students to apply their knowledge of multiplication to real examples to pull it altogether. Then, we get to connect multiplication to division. I'm excited to see the scholars' faces when they discover they are actually dividing already in second grade! I am so proud of their efforts in these challenging concepts! We will have a quiz on both concepts on Friday. - There will also be a History test on Friday. This will be the last week of our Ancient Greece unit! Please continue to study a little bit with your scholar each night and be sure they complete their nightly summary covering anything in the notes or class discussion. If a little bit of studying is done each night, the test will not seem nearly as daunting! Please look at the journals that pertain to Ancient Greece to help with studying. We will also review in class on Thursday. - This will also be the last week of our Gods and goddesses unit in literature. The students have enjoyed learning about all the myths and how some events in nature are even related to these myths! It has been a great unit to pair with our Ancient Greece unit in History. The students are making these connections all on their own, which makes me incredibly proud. - This Wednesday we will have a classroom spelling bee! Last week, you received a list of some words that your scholar could study for this event. The winner of our class will also participate in the school-wide spelling bee on December 9th. - We have had many music practices for next week's concert on December 8th from 5:30-6:30 at Palm Valley Church. I'm so excited to see all of the students' hard work come together. I look forward to seeing you all there! As always, please know that I am here if you have any questions or concerns. Let's finish the second quarter strong! Warmly, Jamie Gaab

Happy Thanksgiving!
It is going to be a very short week!
Miss Gaab Good afternoon,
We are officially halfway through second quarter! In the coming week…. - We will finish our measurement unit and have a test this Friday. - This week we are starting a new history unit about Ancient Greece along with new Greek literature in reading. - We are finishing Hundred Dresses today and will complete the test tomorrow. - Second grade will visit the book fair tomorrow at 12:00. Please send in money with your scholar tomorrow morning if you want to purchase any books. - This is the last week to practice our poem, The Cow. Please be sure your scholar is ready to present it on November 23rd. - Please also continue to be sure your scholar is writing a history summary each night at the bottom of their notes in their history journal. There will be a quiz this Thursday and next Tuesday. Good afternoon,
This week’s highlights: - Science Test on Friday. Please be sure to study a little each night and continue to write a two sentence summary covering anything in the notes or discussed in class. This will ensure success on the test. - We began our measurement unit today in Math. You will see some of the homework is lighter this week, but please be sure to complete it all each night. - Literary and Historical Figure Day – Friday - No school on Wednesday. - Please be sure jackets are in uniform. Jackets that are not in uniform may only be worn outside. - If your child does not have Hundred Dresses, please purchase a copy and send it in as soon as possible. - Your scholar will not receive Rocket Math that night if they passed during class. If they bring Rocket Math home, it means they need to practice those facts again. Have them warm up and finish the rest of the facts inside the box. Then, have them complete the problems around the box and time them for one minute. - Remember to keep practicing our poem. It is due November 23, 2015. - Please check the blog if there are any questions about homework, spelling words, or the poem. Please let me know if you have any questions. It is a joy to spend time with your child every day. Parents,
I’m glad to be back into the swing of things! I hope everyone had a safe and fun weekend. In Math this week, we will have a test on Friday covering unit 2, which includes making ten, word problems, number bonds, and addition and subtraction with renaming. We have been prepping well for this, and I have been encouraging students to ask questions when they do not understand. Please be sure to spend extra time on homework this week to ensure success on Friday. Also, please be sure to finish any Rocket Math sheets that are sent home in a red folder. Finish problems in the box first, and then time your scholar for one minute on the problems around the box. This needs to be returned the next day. If your scholar does not come home with Rocket Math that day, this simply means they passed that level in class and did not need to practice it further. Today, we finished our beloved Boxcar Children book. The students were able to read more of this story themselves, and they thoroughly enjoyed that. I really do love hearing them read. We will have a test covering this book on Wednesday. It will look similar to our quizzes with some multiple choice and some short answer. We will also begin 100 Dresses on Friday. If you have not purchased and brought in this book yet, please do so by Friday. We are finishing our unit on Egypt. It is so exciting to hear the students come in with new facts about Egypt that they have learned from home. That is all thanks to you! They have loved learning about the mummies and pharaohs, and we are excited to see how our experiment turns out on Wednesday. We are also having a test on Wednesday. If your scholar has been studying a little bit each night and completing their summary each night to review, this test should be a breeze! Please be sure to complete these summaries each night to avoid a low homework grade. This Tuesday and Thursday we will have Galileo testing. Please be sure your scholar is getting plenty of sleep and a healthy breakfast especially for these days. Tonight, your scholar brought home a new poem. It is the called The Cow. Please have this memorized and ready to present by November 23rd. It would be great to focus on one stanza each week. If you have a note or any information for me, please email me. Notes in agendas often fall out or are not checked first thing in the morning. To have the best communication between us, use email to ensure the quickest and surest response. On Fridays, when yellow folders go home, we ask that you go through each paper with your scholar so they are aware of the grades they are receiving and then sign the yellow folder on the sheet stapled inside. Many yellow folders are still full when they come back in on Monday mornings, and I want the feedback I give back each week help you understand what is happening during the school day. Students are aware of the fact that if they do not complete their homework the night it is assigned, they can bring it back later in the week for half credit up until the end of the week. After that, zero points will be given. They must be responsible and show me if they chose to make up the work they did not complete and have all work on their desk first thing in the morning for full credit. Please remind scholars of this policy if they forget to do homework one night. If your scholar is absent and misses a quiz or test, they will be invited to come make it up during 3:00-3:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays or 1:30-2:00 on Wednesdays). Emails will be sent out to schedule the best time. These assignments must be made up within 2 weeks of the absence or a zero will be recorded. If there is ever a question about homework for the week or a spelling words list has been lost, please check the blog for all information. It is updated weekly with the homework and the spelling words for that week. It is a tool to help you.
