Parents,
Upcoming events: - September 30th - Half day - October 5th - Singapore Math Informational Night - 6:00-7:00 - October 7th - No school - October 10th-October 14th - Fall Break This week: - We will have 31 spelling words this week. Please be sure to write the markings on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to receive full credit on homework. There will be 11 words on Monday and 10 words on Tuesday and Wednesday. - In math, we will be studying two and three digit subtraction with renaming. Throughout the week at home, please avoid the term "borrowing." At school, we use the language of renaming. Instead of borrowing a one, students learn that if we do not have enough ones or tens, we need to rename the number. For example, if we are subtracting 68 from 82, students would need to rename 8 tens to be 7 tens and 10 ones. When the ten ones are added to the two ones, we now have 12 ones, which is enough to subtract 8 from. There will be a quiz on Friday. - In history, we will continue to study the geography of North and South America. There will be a quiz on Tuesday over Canada, Mexico, the West Indies, and Central America. - In literature, we will read chapters 12 and 13 in Boxcar Children. There will not be quiz this week. - In grammar, we will discuss article adjectives. There will not be quiz this week. Please let me know if you have any questions. Mrs. Bennett

Parents,
To be sure students are successful on their grammar quiz on subject nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives, we have decided as a second grade team to post-pone the test until Friday. I have still sent home a study guide tonight inside their red folder that would be very beneficial for scholars to study throughout the week. The quiz will now be Friday, September 23rd. Thank you for support from home in preparing them for this quiz. Mrs. Bennett Parents,
The quarter is flying by! October break will be here before we know it! I have thoroughly enjoyed my class this year. They have already grown so much. It's exciting to think about where they will be at the end of May. Upcoming events: - September 21st - Spalding Informational Night - 6:00-7:00 - Please come find out more about Spalding to further understand how you can help your child with phonics and to see what they experience each day. - September 23rd - Spirit Day - Students are encouraged to wear their Athenian Spirit Wear or Class t-shirts along with the rest of their uniform (uniform bottoms with belt, shirt tucked in, and uniform shoes) on this day. - September 30th - Half Day - October 5th - Singapore Math Informational Night - 6:00-7:00 - Please come hear myself and Cherie Miller, our Dean of Academics, talk more about the Singapore Math methodology. There will be a quiz on Friday. - We will begin a new History unit about the Geography of North and South America. This week, we will look at North America and the United States. Scholars will be taking notes each day that should be studied each night in addition to writing their 2-3 sentence summary. There will be a quiz on Thursday. - In literature, we will read chapter 11 in Boxcar Children and have a quiz over chapters 9-11 on Thursday. - There will be a grammar quiz on Tuesday after reviewing subject nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives on Monday. Please let me know if you have any questions this week. Thank you for your support at home. Mrs. Bennett Parents,
I wanted to give you a brief explanation of the number bonds you see drawn in your child's workbook pages tonight and on many quizzes and tests we have taken and will continue to take in math. Number bonds help students find which operation they should use to solve the word problem (currently only addition or subtraction). There are three things students must determine when filling out the number bond. Two of the number bond's circles are parts and one circle is the whole. The whole is the circle with the two parts coming out of it. The two parts equal the whole when added together. We put a question mark in the circle that we are solving for. Students know that: "If we are looking for the whole, we add." "If we are looking for a part, we subtract. " Please come hear more from me about Singapore math on October 5th from 6:00-7:00! Mrs. Bennett Parents,

Occasionally, we will complete math or spelling pages in class during this Lyceum time, but it is not guaranteed that homework will be completed each day or in its entirety.
