Rule 29: We are allowed to double the consonant even though we don't hear it in the word to protect a vowel from being at the end of a syllable (ex: bet ter) MARKINGS Underline: We underline two letter phonograms, if a vowel is saying its second sound at the end of a syllable, or jobs of the silent final E. Numbers: Numbers written above phonograms indicate which sound the phonogram is making in that word. Numbers written next to silent, final E's indicate which job of the silent, final E is being used.
