Parents,
I wanted to give you a brief explanation of the number bonds you see drawn in your child's workbook pages tonight and on many quizzes and tests we have taken and will continue to take in math. Number bonds help students find which operation they should use to solve the word problem (currently only addition or subtraction). There are three things students must determine when filling out the number bond. Two of the number bond's circles are parts and one circle is the whole. The whole is the circle with the two parts coming out of it. The two parts equal the whole when added together. We put a question mark in the circle that we are solving for. Students know that: "If we are looking for the whole, we add." "If we are looking for a part, we subtract. " Please come hear more from me about Singapore math on October 5th from 6:00-7:00!
