Dear Parents,
The first week of school was an absolute success! I greatly enjoyed getting to know each student and their unique personalities. We truly have a wonderful class, and I am excited for the memories we will make this year. Also, thank you to all the parents who attended Meet the Teacher Night; it was a pleasure to meet you. Next week, we will dive head first into some fun content. During our reading time, we will start reading Charlotte’s Web and identifying important vocabulary throughout to support our understanding. I am excited my second grade team chose this wonderful classic to kick off our literature units and your child’s love for reading. You may have already seen your scholar come home with a new pencil grip or some new ways to form letters. We will continue working very hard to develop beautiful handwriting in class, and I would greatly appreciate this support at home as well in all homework and non-academic work as well. It will also be important for you to open up your phonogram cards and help your scholar memorize the sounds we have been working on in class. This is very imperative! Please take the time each night to quickly quiz your child. In mathematics, we will officially begin using our Singapore Math curriculum. I am confident this method will truly improve each student’s math skills, no matter the different strengths and weaknesses they each have in these beginning stages. The main concept to be covered is place value and how we can use the knowledge we have of place value to rename numbers. Our history and science units will alternate every unit. To begin, we will study geography. Students will be able to identify their own continent, country, state, and city. They will also be able to use a map and understand important landforms. This week we will also begin sending homework home in the red homework folder. Please keep an eye out for this folder, as it will contain all workbooks and papers needed to complete the nightly homework. Lastly, please be sure to send in all necessary materials, folders, and books as soon as possible if you have not already done so. We will start using them on Monday, and I do not want anyone to get behind. I will be sending out personalized emails to each of you to simplify having to decipher which books you still need. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected]. I am looking forward to another great week! Warmly, Jamie Gaab
