Parents, This week begins the second half of the third quarter! There is still so much that our scholars have to learn before the end of the year, but this week made me reflect on how far they've come. I'm so proud of them. Upcoming events: Monday, February 19: NO SCHOOL - Presidents Day Tuesday, February 27: Peter Piper Pizza Night Friday, March 9: No school March 12-16: Spring Break Here is a look at this week: This week: Cursive- Each night, in the spelling packet, there will be a sheet for your child to practice their cursive handwriting. Please have them write each night's phonograms 3 times in the space provided. Please make sure they take their time and form their letters correctly. Spalding- There will be no words on MONDAY! Your scholar will have 10 new words this week. Each night, your scholar will receive a piece of paper, in their red folder, with the 5 words that were studied in class that day. Please dictate the words to your scholar 3 times in different orders. As your scholar writes the words, they need to also do the markings for each word. Please have your scholar write their words in their best Spalding handwriting. Markings need to be done on Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday you should dictate all 10 words to your scholar. Markings are not required on Thursday. ****If your child is misspelling a word, please mark it wrong and have them correct it on their homework. Scholars need to study phonograms 1-70 every night. If your scholar can say all 70 phonogram sounds, please practice having them write their phonograms as you dictate to them. They can now begin practicing these in cursive! Math- We will continue to learn more mental math strategies and how to apply them to subtraction with numbers through the hundreds. There will be a quiz on Friday. Please continue to work on basic math facts at home with your child. Addition and subtraction facts through 20 should be mastered by the end of the year. History- In history we will continue our unit on Westward Expansion. We will continue studying the Native Americans and learn about the railroads. There will be a test on Friday. Please continue to ask your child about what they learned in class that day! Literature- We will finish our story, Cricket in Times Square this week. It has been a lovely story that our scholars have enjoyed very much. I have a surprise for them next week about the book we will begin. I bet they will let you know on Monday which one it will be, as I anticipate they will be quite excited. Poetry- We have been practicing, Windy Nights, in class. Please have your child practice nightly as we will start reciting the poem next week! Please look a few posts back to see the poem if your copy has been lost. Writing and Grammar- We will continue to work with nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. Students will be working on a key word outline to write a 5 sentence summary from the excerpt of The 101 Dalmatians. Please email me if you have any questions! Mrs. Bennett
