Parents,
There are only three weeks until Spring Break. We have many things still to accomplish before this time, so please continue to be diligent when completing homework with your scholar each night. This time is incredibly valuable. Upcoming events: Monday, February 19: NO SCHOOL - Presidents Day Tuesday, February 27: Peter Piper Pizza Night Friday, March 9: No school March 12-16: Spring Break This week: Spalding- Your scholar will have 12 new words this week. All spelling words are to be written in cursive each night. Please have your scholar write their words in their best Spalding cursive. Markings need to be done on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday you should dictate all 12 words to your scholar. Markings are not required on Thursday. ****If your child is misspelling a word, please mark it wrong and have them correct it on their homework. Scholars need to study phonograms 1-70 every night. If your scholar can say all 70 phonogram sounds, please practice having them write their phonograms as you dictate to them. They can now begin practicing these in cursive! Math- We will review all mental math strategies for addition and subtraction. There will be a test on Thursday. We will begin a unit on money on Friday. Please continue to work on basic math facts at home with your child. Addition and subtraction facts through 20 should be mastered by the end of the year. Science - We will begin a new science unit on life cycles. On Tuesday, we will begin to study the life cycle of a plant. Students will get to watch their own lima bean plant grow as we learn about each part of the cycle. There will be a quiz on Friday. Please continue to ask your child about what they learned in class that day. NEW HOMEWORK: On Thursday, students will be given a keyword outline to glue into their journals for homework. They are to use this outline to write a summary about what was learned in class that day. Literature- To follow up our study of The Iliad in the second quarter, we will begin reading The Odyssey on Tuesday. Students will be surprised with this information, and I know they will be thrilled, as Ancient Greece was one of the highlights of second grade for them thus far. Poetry- We have been practicing, Windy Nights, in class. Please have your child practice nightly as we will start reciting the poem this week! Please look a few posts back to see the poem if your copy has been lost. Writing and Grammar- We will continue to work with nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. Students will be learning that they can go to a noun or pronoun and ask, "What kind? How many?" to identify an adjective. Please email me if you have any questions! Mrs. Bennett
