Parents,
The quarter is flying by! October break will be here before we know it! I have thoroughly enjoyed my class this year. They have already grown so much. It's exciting to think about where they will be at the end of May. Upcoming events: - September 21st - Spalding Informational Night - 6:00-7:00 - Please come find out more about Spalding to further understand how you can help your child with phonics and to see what they experience each day. - September 23rd - Spirit Day - Students are encouraged to wear their Athenian Spirit Wear or Class t-shirts along with the rest of their uniform (uniform bottoms with belt, shirt tucked in, and uniform shoes) on this day. - September 30th - Half Day - October 5th - Singapore Math Informational Night - 6:00-7:00 - Please come hear myself and Cherie Miller, our Dean of Academics, talk more about the Singapore Math methodology. This week: - In Spalding, we will have 30 spelling words total with 11 words on Monday, 9 on Tuesday, and 10 on Wednesday. Please be sure to complete markings on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Markings are not required on Thursdays. - In math, we will begin studying addition and subtraction with renaming. Throughout the week at home, please avoid the terms "carrying the one." At school, we use the language of renaming. Instead of carrying a random one, students learn that if there are 14 ones, we need to rename that to be 4 ones and 1 ten. There will be a quiz on Friday. - We will begin a new History unit about the Geography of North and South America. This week, we will look at North America and the United States. Scholars will be taking notes each day that should be studied each night in addition to writing their 2-3 sentence summary. There will be a quiz on Thursday. - In literature, we will read chapter 11 in Boxcar Children and have a quiz over chapters 9-11 on Thursday. - There will be a grammar quiz on Tuesday after reviewing subject nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives on Monday. Please let me know if you have any questions this week. Thank you for your support at home. Mrs. Bennett
